A Proper Thanksgiving Blessing

Yesterday, President Obama gave thanks to Americans. He thanked the troops; he thanked one another; he did not thank God.

I am not here to chastise the president or to berate him for failing to thank God, from whom all things flow. I am here to correct him. You cannot be thankful for all you have without thanking God, who gave it all to you. And so, I offer this blessing for you.

God, thank you for your gift of life. Thank you for providing us a country dedicated to You. Thank you for our individual liberties, the abundance of our country and the opportunity to succeed.

Guide us in our compassion toward others. Remind us that whatever we do for the least of our brothers, we do for You.

Forgive our sins and let us love one another as the Lord loves us.

Father, send forth your spirit to renew the face of the earth. Bless us and hold our country in the palm of your hand. We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
